Now, today, this. This is step number two.
And this? This will be step number three.
Get used to it. Come to grips with it.
Why? Because we can't invade them.

Maybe what you're trying to say is that whether the US is a legitimate hegemon or not, we currently act as though we are. And that's not a sustainable position due to our small and ever-diminishing power on the world stage.
